How to collect your feather sample for Cari-gene

Feather collection may best be done by two individuals but is simple enough that it can be done by a single person without significant hassle. Follow the steps below for sample collection:

  1. Pluck 4-5 feather from the chest, tail or wing. It is not necessary to pluck large flight or tail feathers. The small secondary feathers work well and won't interfere with the birds ability to fly or detract from its beauty
  2. Place feathers from each bird into a separate envelope or zip-lock bag and label with your name, the bird's species, and an identification name or number for the bird on the envelope or ziplock and seal. (Polly or Pete is fine, but having your bird ringed is helpful but not necessary)
  3.  Place all the feather packets into a larger envelope and mail to us along with the appropriate service fee (See FAQ).  Courier services like FedEx, DHL or UPS are fast and provide tracking information however regular snail mail services are fine. Feathers should be plucked so that they reach our laboratory within four (4) weeks of being plucked. (Allow two(2) weeks for regional snail mail). For samples in Barbados, call us and we'll for sample drop-off or use our collection service.
  4. We will contact you to confirm that we have received your samples and we will email and/or hardcopy your birds' sex results within 5 working days.
