Frequently Asked Questions

01

How does DNA sexing work?

DNA sexing on birds works on the principle that certain genes in hens and cock are slightly different. We use a test called a PCR that is designed to identify those differences. While the difference is small, using our sophisticated analytical techinques we are able to see those differences and accurately determine the sex of most birds.

02

Is DNA sexing accurate?

DNA sexing is the most accurate form of sex determination in birds. DNA simply does not lie. To improve the accuracy of our test, we perform two independent test one on each bird. Both tests must be in agreement before we return results to the owner. Compared to pelvic bone sexing commonly used with love birds, we have found that while our test is 99.4% accurate, pelvic bone sexing is only 56% accurate (just a little bit better than guessing). Our tests have resulted in increased breeding efficiency.

03

Feather sexing vs. blood sexing, what's the difference?

DNA is DNA no matter where it comes from. Sexing using blood at the DNA source had been the most common way to obtain useful samples. Advancement in bio-technology and improved efficiency now means that we can collect enough DNA from as few as 3-5 freshly plucked feathers from the chest, wing or tail. We encourage feather testing to minimize trauma to the bird, eliminate the possibility of infection or excessive blood loss. You can have your birds sexed from any age without fear of endangering your bird.
